Question:

I have a question for all of you who know about protection training… How legitimate are the people who sell already protection trained dogs to families? I have seen people who gaurantee their dogs temperments, stability, love of children and instant response to commands… just wondering if this is a good way for a family to get a stable reliable dog?  All repsonses are appreciated. Response:

If all members of the family go into the training program with the dog it might be lig.  Protection training is a relationship not just a dog. There have been civil lawsuits over "protection dogs" attacking people that they were sold to.  Here in CA a police dog can not be given (when it retires) to just anyone unless thay have training. We have taken in a dog that was in the middle of training when it broke it’s foot.  It was washed out and now there is a great debate on if it must be put down, placed with a "trained" owner of just placed. We put up the bond to hold it as the breeder in europe requested it be put down rather then returned, (the break was bad and did leave a club foot). The reg’s don’t state when a dog is "trained".  Everyone wants freedom from a suit if it did bite someone yet there is no process to do that. We want the dog to go into a search/rescue training program. It is very well trained and smart, just a couple of inches short on the right front but with a protective pad it can run just not climb. dw – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > I have a question for all of you who know about protection training… > How legitimate are the people who sell already protection trained dogs to > families? My opinion on that is I don’t think it should be done, I really believe that all the training should involve the owner (family) I just don’t think it makes for a good situation with out them involved, Dan H > I have a question for all of you who know about protection training… > How legitimate are the people who sell already protection trained dogs to > families? Wanted to add – Now under CA law if you train your dog to attack or even just claim to have and the dog while under your control or not, bites someone it is a class2 fel’ against you. Of course they do exclude Lic* working dogs and people commiting fel’s.  So if you tresspass (a misto) and a dog that has been trained to attack does you can be charged. dw * the lic program has not started but currently includes dog under employment of the gov.

The trainer I deal with trains protection dogs as well as basic obedience. He is a believer that the handler of the dog, regardless of the type of training, needs to be trained with the dog to make the bond. Without that bond between handler/trainer, he does not believe the dog to be stable with his commands, especially if he is trained for protection. Donna
