Question:
Hi! Would like suggestions/opinions on what to do and where to go in Melb/Sydney/Tasmania(Hobart & Launceston) in July. Also, tips on what to pack since it’s mid-winter. Thanks in advance, Grace

Pack your winter woolies! It’s cold in Tassie in winter. There are a number of links for information on Tasmania on this web site: http://www.ozemail.com.au/~kemoon/Strahan.html

Tips on Sydney. Ferry trips on the harbour when it is fine weather and head for the Power House Museum and the Art Gallery on less than fine days. The cactus garden in the Botanical Gardens is an interesting place and the Rocks ( if touristy) is enjoyable walking. Beware of the Opera House and surroundings on a wet and windy day but there are covered walks. We say they are to keep off the sun! I like the Zoo and reccommend the tourist bus that takes in the beaches , Watsons Bay and the Paddington Market among other attractions. Chinatown has good food. Tips on Melbourne. Awkward for someone from Sydney. But the Art Gallery is worth a visit or two and try to fit in a visit to one of the comedy venues. Tips on Tasmania. There it will be winter and so take advantage of the B&B and guest houses that offer warm fires, hearty walks and scenery plus comfort. What to packr? Layers. Avoid cotton. It does not dry easily. Mixtures are better. Light weght wool clothing or mixtures of wool and synthetics are better than mixtures of cotton and synthetics. Pack gloves ( light weight or kid) and include a scarf that you can wrap around yourself when it is cold and use as fashion accessory in the evening. Include a pair of shorts or alternative light summery clothing for the warmer day that may catrch you unawares…or take enough money with you to buy. Which brings me to tips on shopping. If you are lucky you may hit either Sydney or Melbourne in the throes of "the sales". Enjoy CJM

As someone else mentioned, pack lots of warm clothes as it can be quite cold here at that time of year… layers are good, as the weather can also be quite changeable. If you’re planning to do any bushwalking or hiking at all, make sure you have some sturdy leather hiking boots and thick socks (running shoes or ‘joggers’ are useless for walking, especially if it’s wet). Also, in Tasmania, umbrellas are pretty useless, as it is usually quite windy when it rains, and umbrellas tend to blow inside out, so therefore a good waterproof raincoat would come in handy if you’re planning on doing much outdoors-type stuff, in case you get caught in the rain. In Tassie, there are lots of places of interest, depending on what you’re into. Some of these, in no particular order, include: * Port Arthur, very beautiful place, despite all the recent adverse publicity (and the tourism industry on the peninsula needs more visitors to survive) * the Cadbury chocolate factory (Hobart) * Wrest Point Casino (Hobart), or The Launceston Country Club Casino. * Botanical Gardens (Hobart) * See the monkeys in City Park, or the peacocks and other sights in Cataract Gorge (Launceston) * Salamanca Markets, Sat mornings in Hobart (a must see), and all the craft/art places in Salamanca Place all the time (not just Sat mornings) * Go for a cruise up the Derwent River (Hobart) There are also heaps of wildlife reserves, where you can see Tassie Devils and other native Aust animals (Bonorong Park, just north of Hobart is quite good), and lots of other touristy things to do… check out a Tasmanian Tourist Bureau for more info. hope this is helpful, Caro — University of Tasmania Ph +61 02 354831 GPO Box 252C Hobart, 7001. "Hi! Would like suggestions/opinions on what to do and where to go in Melb/Sydney/Tasmania(Hobart & Launceston) in July. Also, tips on what to pack since it’s mid-winter. Thanks in advance," Grace – for Melbourne try: The Arts Centre, Southbank, Concert Hall & Theatres – all within a few minutes of each other just south of Princes Bridge in the City. The free city circle tourist tram (which is staffed by tourist information people). Music: The Victorian College of the Arts has free concerts at lunchtime and at around 5pm many weekdays – see the cream of Australia’s young talent – classical, Jazz etc – all for free. Check at the College of the Arts or at St John’s Southbank when you get here. Eating: Lygon St, Carlton (Italian), Little Bourke St (China Town), Acland St St Kilda (great cake shops), Swan St Richmond (Greek), Bridge Rd Richmond (Vietnamese) – in fact, if its food you want, you can’t starve in Melbourne! Queen Victoria Market (Sun, Tue, Thur, Fri & Sat) – you can even find two places in the market to get your name engraved on a grain of rice! Craft – The Meat Market craft centre in North Melbourne. Seeing the sites – buses leave daily from the City for destinations such as Healesville Santuary, Phillip Island Penguin Parade, The Great Ocean Road etc…. Gardens – The Botanical Gardens, Fitzroy Gardens, Flagstaff Gardens – all on the city’s fringe Buy these books: "The Lonely Planet Guide to Australia" and "Cheap Eats in Melbourne" You can probably only buy the second book actually in Melbourne. Buy The Age on Friday for the Entertainment Guide. It lists just about everything happening around the City. Be careful of places selling tourist souvenirs – don’t be afraid to shop around – you may even find the same items cheaper in the City Department stores. Bring (or buy) a waterproof coat such as a Goretex jacket rather than an umbrella And have a GREAT time in the Best City in the World! Peter Dwyer Melbourne

See Phantom of the Opera/Miss Saigon in Sydney. Eat lunch/dinner on top of the CenterPoint tower. Lots of Bay Cruises to Manly and other places. Nice caves near Mole Creek, Tasmania (just west of Launceston) Port Arthur was nice, but in light of what recently happened, I don’t know if you’d want to go there. In Melbourne, take a cruise on the Yarra River. Go to the top of Rialto. Walk through the Victoria Gardens : And have a GREAT time in the Best City in the World! And watch out for the "Winta Gastro" that always comes around. It’ll knock you flat on your backside. Ended up losing 11kg myself. Drew Brown

To my way of looking at it, by not going, you kill a community that depends on tourism. Nobody can bring back the dead, but shunning the area doesn’t help their families and friends.
