Question:

" I think whatever exercise you choose, it will do you good in many ways. I personally recommend including lifting weights to make your muscles stronger and bones stronger." Jason Yes, l agree. I would add that strength training should include multi-joint exercises, particularly lower body one’s like squatting, as these have been scientifically proven to maintain the structural integrity of bones. Navid

Response:

I don’t exercise as much as I used to, but I do lift weights about 3 times per week when I am not in a serious flare or I have hurt my back.  I find when I am going regularly, I feel better in many ways.  I believe just feeling stronger gives me a psycological boost and of course the exercise is actually doing good for my heart, lungs etc.  I also play raquetball about once every 2 weeks or so.  In the last couple of weeks, I have been to the outdoor rink playing hockey which has been fun and very good for my cardio fitness. I think whatever exercise you choose, it will do you good in many ways.  I personally recommend including lifting weights to make your muscles stronger and bones stronger. Jason

I do about forty minutes of yoga every night before bed, I’d love to do it first thing in the morning but I’m always far toolethargic.  Then every afternoon I take my dog for a walk for about forty five minutes.  I’d recommend the yoga because it’s very relaxing before I goto bed. ;o)

It’s a good idea to start off with light exercise and once your body can handle that you should extend it from there. I used to do loads of exercise but now I tend to only do sport and stuff at school. I used to regularly enjoy badminton, gymnastics, athletics, netball and cycling before I got ill and I now only do the cycling when i feel like it. Sometime i use my sisters rowing machine too but that is very rarely. Maybe you should try doing little but often to start with. This way, it shoudnt drain you of enery (too much) or make you feel yucky. Good luck with your plan Sarah

Excellent! Annie, l like your determination and positive thinking. The part of Boston where you live seems quite pleasant from your description. And the hills can be put to good use in exercising. Personally, l live near the river Thames, Royal Docks and the London city airport. I love to jog through the docks, around the airport perimeter, and then along the river side. Early morning brisk walking is a definite yes. And the duration of 20 to 40 minutes is fine. As you get fitter, the likelihood of getting the urge to vacate the bowels during exercise should diminish. If you want to reduce the likelihood of triggering the urge to empty the bowels during exercise, one of the things you will need to do is a longer warm up-  walk at normal pace to warm up for 12-15mins before doing the ‘exercise proper’. Do not have coffee before exercise. If you are hungry, then have a proper breakfast. Wait for at least 30 mins, then exercise. But l think that the best for you is to simply take water before exercise, and then once you have finished exercising- wait 30 mins then have breakfast. An ideal breakfast after morning exercise would be high protein with carbohydrate. Protein drinks that you mix with milk are quite good for this. Also, during the brisk walking, do short intervals at a faster pace to elevate your heart rate and then back down to a brisk walk i.e. 15mins gentle walk, 5mins Brisk walking, 1min jogging or brisk walking up a hill, followed by 5mins normal walking- then repeat. Buy a heart rate monitor if you can, and wind proof outer wear if you don’t already have some. It will make a lot of difference. It is snowing outside here and is freezing. But with the right clothing l will be exercising tomorrow morning when it is still dark. Hi Navid, I walk as much as I can. I’m fit enough now to enjoy it and finding it very benefic. I do some yoga either in the morning when I wake up or just before I go to bed in the evening. (I prefer doing it in the morning if I can. It help me start my day better) I try to do a little bit of weight lifting both in the morning and in the evening (very little at time. I do 3 or 4 differents exercises by series of 10) I’m starting to be fit enough now to even consider doing some jogging, some rollerblade or even starting a martial art!
