Exercise R Us » Exercising » damn those muscle cramps
Question:
I’m just coming out of one of these! I have AS which is generally under control. Monday morning I was driving back from delivering my son to the babysitter and in 15 minutes could feel the muscles seizing from sacroiliac up, almost like a wave. By the time I got home, my neck was almost completely seized. My solution was Norflex (muscle relaxant, recently available in Ontario OTC but was prescription only a few months ago), Tylenol 3 and two days in bed. The Norflex makes some people really sleepy (me included) so if you go this route, be prepared. This has happened to me several times in the last few years, and the treatment was prescribed by my rheumatologist. You’d probably want to check with yours in any case. Hope you feel better soon! Claudia (down to Tylenol extra-strength and off the Norflex)

Yep When my fibromyalgia is flaring, that is what it feels like, from my butt to the back of my head. Char "Remember, I’m pulling for ya’. We’re all in this together." Red Green

Same condition – OA and herniated disc. I have had the DDD for a long time, so I was rx 600mg Ibuprofen and Robaxin (a muscle relaxant). They worked for me really well for a lot of years. I would also have to lay down for a couple of hours to relieve the pressure on the nerves. As a side note – I found that when I increased my milk intake, I could reduce this kind of sudden on set cramping (as opposed to the kind I caused by lifting or exercising wrong. I also recently saw the PT about my OA and he tried me out on a TENS unit (an electrical stimulation device). Four pads (like and EKG) are attached across the affected area and then it send a vibration feeling to the area. The unit itself looks like an old hand-held transistor radio. It has two dials to change the intensity in either pair of pads. At the lowest level it feels like a tickle, at the highest it feels like an electric shock, at the middle (where it most effective) it feels like a vibrating chair at Sharper Image. He said that if it works for me that my doc can prescribe one and I can use it in the car (I have a 1 1/2 hour commute one-way), or anytime I get the pain. It worked well for my muscle spasms, but it did not do much for my OA pain.
