Exercise R Us » Exercise Training » Digging problem with 2 year old male Lab
Question:
I have a 2 year old male lab that will not stop digging.. He usually digs in one place but it seems like it is starting to spread. He is a well behaved dog, but just likes to make small "swimming pools" in my backyard. One major problem we are having is we have a new puppy (9 weeks old), that is copying everything Milo is doing, including digging… (and lifting a leg when she pees
) I was told by my vet that if I got another dog it would help with Milo’s problem with digging and chewing.. His reasoning behind this was that my dog only digs and chews when he is bored. So I got a great mut.. she’s fun and they get along well.. but as I said before she is starting to copy everything.. Any suggestions anyone has on how to break these problems would be much appreciated… Thanks in adance, Skinner (Father of Milo and Sasha)

You could try burying some of your dog’s "messes" in the holes that he has been working on, then fill in the hoelwith dirt. Once the hole is filled in, he will try to dig it out and get an unpleasant suprise. Dogs HATE that. Our neighbor’s used this method to stop her dog from digging; it worked within a couple of days. Good luck

Not leaving dog out when gone overnite, in shower or whenever not in a position to prevent such behaviors is best. Take dog for 2 to 3 30minute leash walks followed by 10 minutes of retrieving as well as enrolling in a basic training program will give your dog exercise and attention it needs. We used this method with Murphy and Mindy, and within a couple of weeks they were both completely ‘cured’ of digging anywhere in the back yard. Murphy still loves a good dig when she’s at the beach or in the dirt at the river, but has never again dug in the back yard. However I think it depends a bit on the dog, as my brother’s dog has not been cured through this method, though she is left at home in the yard on her own all day, so is unsupervised, unlike Murphy and Mindy, who are never left more than a couple of hours and since they grew out of chewing things, and are left indoors anyway. So perhaps a combination of the poop treatment and not leaving your dogs unsupervised in the yard for too long a period. Good luck! Rachel

It didn’t take too long either….just a few holes filled in. It even works for things like a young tree. I was worried about my puppy chewing on it b/c it isn’t that much bigger than the sticks that she IS allowed to chew sometimes. a small fence around it with a couple poops tossed in there for a few days and she decided she’d rather just stay away from it. I would to I guess! Eric
