Exercise R Us » Exercise Training » American Eskimo??

Question:

I have to admit that my Eskie was rather rambunctious until about 2 1/4 yrs old.  No matter how much I played with him, how many walks we took, no matter WHAT, he wanted to do more. He also was very focused if I gave a command, but sometimes would only stop to look at me as if saying "I thought about it, and I’m still going to do what you don’t want me to".  He grew out of it, and is now the BEST dog I could EVER hope for.   Have patience.  It’s definately worth the wait!!!  You’ll find that your Eskie is very loyal, and extremely loving!  At least, Kippers is!!!

Response:

We have a 16 month old American Eskimo male and he has already showed signs of slowing down a little.  He will have his moments though when he wants to play but when we decide that’s enough, he will do his own thing.  As long as he can play at least 30 minutes a day, he’s satisfied. So far, this is the best breed I’ve owned and I’ve had purebreeds and mixed breeds.  I don’t think I"ll ever own anything but an eskie from now on. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Eskies are commonly referred to as "hyper". I think it may be more in the dog and the owner itself.. My Eskie is going to be 6 this year, and she is just as playful as a puppy.. But I play with her everyday.. She is kept very active.. It may be all in the enviorment!!

to settledown.  I agree that they are beautiful animals and very loving.  Do you have children? and if so is your American Eskimo good with them?

Response:

Hi Brian. I have an 8 year old neutered male. Smartest dog ever, but I’ll probably never own another…. :-) They start to settle down after a few years, which is great since they live forever (or atleast 14 years…) I’ll be putting up some photos of my White Knight (pronounced Ka-nig-it) on my website next week. If you’re interested, I’ll add some Eskie links too. Good luck with your Eskie! Yes, although she’s so eager to play with them that she’ll knock them around a bit. She definitely is not aggressive towards them and only wants to play. After about 30 minutes she finally loses that hyperactive mode and will settle down and snuggle with you and let you pet her to her hearts content.
