and beat the living day lights out of it and it gave me zero trouble!! I’ve since upgraded to a Manitou EFC fork. The bike is wonderful, durable, and you get a ton for your money. BEn!

A 95 Novara Ponderosa has roughly the same equipment (nice Grip Shift instead of RF+) with a front suspension shock and the cranks are Shimano LX too. If you can still find one in a REI store they are going for $594.99 on sale. — Senior Internet Developer University of Texas at Dallas URL:http://www.utdallas.edu/

It has STX-RC and a Quad 21 front shock. It has an aluminum frame and probably weighs around 24.5 lbs. I’ve had it for one season and haven’t had any problems. I really like the riding position for me. The only thing I really need to do is put new tires on it. The Psycho K’s that it came with have almost no tread left. I have been extremely happy with it. I’m not sure, but I think the 96’s have a slightly different component package. I almost think that they downgraded it to reach a certain price point. Maybe went to grip shifters. For me, 700 was about right for me. It got me into an aluminum frame and a decent if not spectacular shock. I had older LX components on my last bike and for now, I like the performance of the newer STX better. I also looked at a Kona "Mini Mula?". Some of the components on the Kona were money saver quality (brake levers), but that bike was a close second. I just got a much better price on the Trek. Kevin Smith

I second the Karakoram. I think GT has some great AL hardtails in that range too

I second this! I have a Karakoram and love it! I plan on adding a suspension fork next season, but other than that, it comes very well equipped! TTYL, ROg! Member TEAM OS/2 and proud of it!! Running WARP Fullpack on a Packard Bell 486DX2-50 and loving it! (My other PC is a Pentium!) If it weren’t for this darned computer, I’d be Mountain biking!!

I agree although I bought a Gary Fisher "HooKooEKoo" and I love it! Although after six months of regular use I had to replace the bottom bracket because it attained a 3 mm side to side looseness. I also had to readjust the rear cones which became so loose that the rim was rubbing the brake pads!!!! These were not Fisher’s (Trek) problems but that of Shimano. Probably due to an assembly line production mentality of faster, faster, faster. Well there is my two cents worth. Brian
