They might, if they keep hiring engineers that can’t even spell. jt

Response:

My lbs has been around for more years  than I have . They do excellent repairs. My sister bought my niece a bike at Kmart for Christmas 88 $ bucks . ( This is the kind of bike you don’t need to lock outside the grocery store) My friend bought a 125$ bike at Costco .( She hates bike riding now.) Neither one of them know about greasing the chain or any other normal maintenance . At least; at my lbs they share info with the buyer. What more can I say? Diane —

Raleigh Ind. supplied all the bikes for Wal-Mart in Canada up until this year. And Trek, well it’s had not to look at a dept. store bike and wonder if Trek bought that company too.  I don’t care if they do this, if Specialized came out with a line of dept. store bikes my only concern would be that the lines they sell now remain of the same high quality.  Just a quick look at the entire Mongoose lineup however shows allot of high end priced bikes with low end components.  Perhaps their frames are really that good and worth t he money, I don’t know, I’m sticking with Specialzed for now with Cannondale in t he back of my mind for the future. —

We feel that most cyclist repair there own bikes…because of this we  can offer the bikes at a lower cost, Our only fear is that people will classify us with Huffy or Murray. one of our thoughts is to cross train car mechanics at Auto service centers to fine tune the bikes?      First of all, do you actually believe your going to pay a auto tech. enough money to " fine tune " all your dept. store race rigs? You don’t even have enough time to teach a stock person how to put a wheel on correctly! Gimme a break!                                                         BM

I don’t fault anybody for selling a good bike at any price through any channel.  That’s the capitalist way.  If I choose to buy at discount, I will do that.  If I choose to buy at a shop that sells "service" I will do that, and in fact that is what I do, most of the time.  If I want to be able to buy parts at discount and fix it myself, I will do that too.  It’s my money. If Mongoose wants to sell killer bikes at Kmart, that’s fine.  I bought my Mongoose at a discount bike shop.  It was my first serious bike, it’s a great ride for the kind of mountain biking I do, sometimes I pay to have it fixed, sometimes I fix it myself… That’s America! The Mongoose bikes at Wal-Mart are really pretty sad looking, I don’t have anything against getting your bike at a dept. store, but getting a "killer" bike at K-Mart is an oxymoron. —

You know "goose" won’t be the only "reputable" bike company to sell crummy bikes cheap to get a few bucks, if that’s what they are doing.  In the early 90’s I bought a Schwinn that cost me around $350 bucks and a sports outlet that must have been guilt out of stove pipes and low end the cheapest components Shimano has.  In about 1.5 years the paint peeled off of it! Yet, my son has a Schwinn road bike that is pretty sweet and you know, the performance of that road bike doesn’t seem to be affected one bit by the fact that Schwinn built me a klunker! Are you saying that the existence of the Schwinn Varsity downgrades the performance of a Schwinn Paramount? Just because the Mongooses are sold at whal-mart doesn’t make them better or worse than the Schwinn I bought at a Sports shop.  In America it’s buyer beware… But, if I hadn’t busted my butt riding that brick I’d probably not ever learned how sweet a good bike is.
