: I was reading in the current issue of MBA that Rock Shox suggests a : complete overhaul of the Judy every 25 hours. Well, I’m way past that : and have never opened ‘er up. My question is A: Is an overhaul a : difficult process and will help? DO I need special tools? Yes, an overhaul will help restore a little plushness to your fork. The only tool required is a 5mm allen wrench. A pair of lock ring pliers is helpful (especially if you don’t have much patience), but not necessary. You should be able to pick up (or borrow) a pair at your LBS for a few $. : and B: How : much better with all these aftermarket parts help? I know White Brothers : has speed springs and there are a bunch of other companies with : upgrades. I think it sucks if you buy a $300 fork and then you need to : spend another $200 to make it work. But if it really makes that much : difference and it’s not that difficult to do, I’d consider it. I haven’t tried springs, but I did put an Englund Total Air cartridge in my Judy. This gives the fork much more usable travel and plushness. You can get a new one for under $65. Gives you unlimited tuning of preload and compression damping and a choice of 3 settings for rebound damping. Plus, it shaves a little weight. I am very happy with mine. (I got mine as an alternative to paying $60 to replace some stock parts that I destroyed in a couple of crashes, plus a blown al cartridge). Installation of the Englund Kit is easier than reinstalling the stock judy parts (no lockring). : Any comments are welcome. One last thought: It’s Friday and I’m on my : way to Cable, Wis. to ride the CAMBA trails all weekend. For those of : you not familiar with the trail system, it’s a fabulous group of 250 : miles worth of trails dedicated to mountain biking. Great rides in a : beautiful locale. I’m stoked. Jeez, you’re making me nostalgic. Maybe I should go back home and visit my parents for a week or two (they live near Cable). Ahhh… Actually, last I heard, there were almost 400 miles of mapped trails in the Cheq’. Awesome riding. If you do most of your riding in this type of terrain, the Englund kit will really help, especially on soaking up all the roots and bumps you find on the xc ski trails. BUT… in the Wisconsin area, you can also set your elastomer fork up pretty soft to help take care of these bumps, without really having to worry about bottoming out the fork on downhills (like in the mtns where I now live) IMHO.
