Question:
Oh, yay … yet another page full of links. Does anyone realise that most of the cycling-related pages out there are just lists of links to other pages which are also lists of links? I’m guilty of this as well (somewhat), but at least my page has lots of other cycling related info as well … as far as I know, I’m the only page out there with results for almost all of the season so far, as well as previews for the Tour, Giro, and a bit on the Vuelta. I think everyone who ever went a-browsin’ realises this. I’ve heard of such things suggested, I wonder what it would take to automate the archival of useful rec.bicycles.* info with a significant shelf life ? Things like Steve Bak’s "As I See It" spring to mind, author permitting. There is some real "stuff" out there as you say – I, and many others, have perpetrated ride reports for instance. And I find that bouncing around other peoples’ link pages is as effective at finding new stuff as sending out WebSnails – automated searches are very imperfect. I know one thing that would help is some kind of callback notification to me when pages that I’ve registered an interest in get updated – but there’s lots of interesting ideas that are Web rather than cycling related, and I’m straying from the point of this message, which is after all to get people to read my web page

Eric’s list sounds pretty comprehensive to me. Most pages I’ve checked out have a few, but certainly not several hundred, links. With input from us users, we could pare down the list to only those that are useful in their own right. I say go for it, Eric. Ron MacDonald

I’ve found several bike related www pages by searching with the webcrawler, lycra, seekfind, etc… http://gnn.com is possibly even a better place to start, though.

How do you do a web page search like that? I’d like to know about freestyle or BMX web pages, but you probably weren’t searching for those.

[snip stuff about a bike related webpage list] i now have a better and easier plan (for you and more importantly for me). i’m going through the lists i have (almost 600 individual URLs although some are duplicates) and getting rid of things like "U of Wyoming Police Dept., How to Register your Bicycle with Campus Police," and other pages not directly related to riding, buying, maintaining, ogling other peoples machines and complaining about bike and mail order companies. when i get done with this, i will set up a new webpage with all of these places as links, not just a list. so…i won’t be sending the list out since it didn’t really work as well as i had planned. people who sent me e-mail requests will get a similar message to this one and will also be mailed the URL for the directory webpage when i get finished with it. i will post the URL when i finish the page, more than likely by the end of the week but hopefully sooner. thanks for your patience and if you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to e-mail me. eric — "i don’t know what caffeine does for you, but i’m pretty sure that without it your head caves in." dept. of molecular bio. and pharm. i told myself that i wasn’t going to do this but i guess i lied. in an attempt to not have all the groups nickled and dimed to death with people making requests for bike related web pages and people replying with one or two that they ard their friends have set up, i performed a few WebCrawler searches of the net and found 559 homepages, some no doubt duplicates in the different searches. i have made a list of these, in no particular order, directly from the WebCrawler Search Results. i performed the searches using "Bicycle," "Cycling," and the simple boolean "mountain AND bike" to get these pages. i don’t really ahve the time or energy to go through them all, and to keep the wasted bandwidth down, i’m not going to post them. if however you would like the list, send me a message with the subject line: bikepage, and i’ll be happy to mail it to you. PLEASE DO NOT respond to this post with a "send me one" or a "me too" message back to the newsgroups, since nobody wants to see it and i’ll probably ignore it (although not on purpose). send me e-mail though and i’ll be happy to help. eric — "i don’t know what caffeine does for you, but i’m pretty sure that without it your head caves in." dept. of molecular bio. and pharm.
